Chinese Culture Talks: Peking Opera

Chinese opera, ancient Greek opera, and Indian Sanskrit opera are regarded as the trinity of classical operas. Peking opera, as the most representative one under the umbrella of Chinese opera, is the most influential one in China, has the largest audience, and achieves the highest artistic standards. It is known as the “quintessence of Chinese culture”.

This video series thoroughly examines the three aesthetic characteristics of Peking opera, namely being comprehensive, symbolic, and stylized. Meanwhile, some wonderful fragments of performance are presented to demonstrate performance methods, stage forms, schools and their distinctive singing techniques, and costumes of traditional Peking opera, which reveals the Chinese-style performance system of Peking opera.
